Since one of the main strategies be the involvement of stakeholders from the beginning of the project in different activities, the workshops are opened to participants beyond the partnership consortium. Workshops are conjointly organised by the partner holding the workshop and by the partner presenting results of their work.

Paper ID 1930 : Train4OrthoMIS:  MIS online course as a manner of improving ergonomics in orthopedic surgery in conference track "Human Factors and Ergonomics in Healthcare" has been updated by AHFE  Admin LA.

Orthopaedics is one of the essentially domains in surgery. This results from the raising orthopaedic disorders magnified specifically by civilization factors like sedentary lifestyle, extension of lifetime or growing automotive industry and associated to this automotive accidents etc. Together with the needs in orthopaedic field it is observed the development of methods and procedures in orthopaedic surgeries. One of the new and still improving approaches is minimal invasive surgery (MIS) or the tendency of reducing the size of skin incisions. Such direction of surgical development is positive, especially for patients, because of better efficiency and effectiveness of surgery, better cosmetics effects or lower risk of infections, but it could cause certain problems for medical staff both for surgeons and scrub nurses. These problems concern ergonomic failures what can lead to fatigue or even musculoskeletal disorders of orthopaedic surgeons and scrub nurses

Particularly, the initial international survey which was conducted on 41 orthopaedic surgeons from Europe confirmed the necessity of improving ergonomics in operating room while performing orthopaedic surgeries. Simultaneously the respondents indicated such physical problems while performing surgeries like: neck pain, thoracic and lumbar pain, stiff neck, fatigue and musculoskeletal stress, fatigue in the legs and feet and mental fatigue or headache. Regarding aspects that could affect non-ergonomic posture during surgical practice they are mainly: patient positioning, static posture surgeon, regulatory ranges and characteristics of the table and type of surgery. In turn to the most important deficiencies in ergonomics area are: awkward body postures, having to stand, the position and height of the table inadequate surgery.

One of the reasons of the poor ergonomic conditions pointing out by surgeons is the lack of proper and useful knowledge because of no trainings related to ergonomics adjusted to the specific needs of medical practitioners.

ERGONOMICS EDUCATION FOR IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF WORKING CONDITIONS IN ORTHOPEDIC PRACTICE

Among many definitions of the concept quality, two of them are especially important from quality of working conditions point of view: quality is the totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bears on its ability to satisfy given needs (ISO 8402:1996 Quality Management and Quality Assurance Vocabulary standard) and quality means freedom from deficiencies (Planning for Quality, 2d ed. (1990). Juran Institute, Inc., Wilton, CT, pp. 1–10). These definitions indicated two essential aspects of  high-quality working conditions in such demanding environment like operating room. The first one is satisfaction of people who are staying (hospitalizing or working) at a hospital.  The second one is completeness of all necessary human and technical components that condition the achievement of aforementioned satisfaction.

On the one hand the appropriate quality of working conditions is necessary to provide patients effective and safe medical services, so they influence in fact on quality of life (QoL) of patients. On the other hand working conditions influence on QoL of surgeons because of contribution of working factors to many inconveniences like mental and physical discomfort, reduced physical condition and even disorders especially within musculoskeletal system.

Taking into account the outcomes of international survey conducted in Spain, Poland and Germany by the project “Online Vocational Training course on ergonomics for orthopedic Minimally Invasive Surgery”, acronym Train4OrthoMIS, one third orthopedic surgeons suffer from low back pain and neck pain. Additionally, for the most common disorders resulted from non-ergonomic working conditions and reported by surgeons belong neck stiffness, fatigue and musculoskeletal stress, fatigue in the legs and feet and mental fatigue. The Figure 1 presents mutual relations between quality, working conditions and their impact on QoL of both internal (medical staff) and external (patients) customers of medical services.
